Scot Schaar

Scot Schaar is a native of the Quad Cities having grown up in Davenport.  He spent his early working years driving a big brown truck.  In the year 2000, Scot and his wife Karen began homebrewing.  This hobby quickly became an obsession in all things fermented.  Their basement is typically filled with beers, meads, wines and ciders in the making.  The duo became judges with the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) and traveled the Midwest judging and entering competitions.  While judging, Scot was introduced to a multitude of beer styles and was exposed to countless recipe ideas.

Integrating this knowledge into his own process has brought a good bit of success with his creations.  He has won literally hundreds of awards including being named Iowa HomeBrewer of the Year twice and 2017 National MeadMaker of the Year.

In 2012, Scot’s knowledge of fermentation landed him the position of Distiller at Mississippi River Distilling Company in LeClaire, Iowa.   Learning from crew at MRDC as well as working with consultants from Germany helped him hone his skills at distilling and producing spirits at a commercial level.

“My goal for CBW is to bring a solid lineup of popular beer styles while throwing some lesser known and fun beers into the mix.  While traveling in Germany and the Czech Republic, Karen and I discovered a wealth of regional beers that I would love to share with the QC beer community.”
